Compatibility: Replacing an EP1502 or LP1502 with an MP1502

This is the question we get most: “I have EP1502s or LP1502s in my system. Can I drop in an MP1502?”

The short answer is yes. The MP1502 is backward-compatible with the EP1502 and LP1502 in the majority of access control platforms. Here’s what you need to know:

Physical installation is the same. The MP1502 uses the same wiring for readers, door locks, REX devices, and inputs/outputs. If you’re pulling a dead EP1502 out of a cabinet and putting an MP1502 in its place, the physical swap is straightforward.

Network connection is the same. Ethernet 10-BaseT/100Base-TX. If your old board had a network cable plugged in, it plugs into the MP1502 the same way. The board also has a USB 2.0 port for local configuration.

Software configuration needs to be updated. In your access control platform, delete the old controller and add the new MP1502 according to the platform administrator guide. This normally includes the new board’s MAC address and IP plus reassignment of doors and downstream modules.

What About Software Licensing?

The Mercury MP1502 is hardware and controls 2 doors directly. Your access control software may require a separate license for each managed opening.

If you’re replacing a failed board: You already have the door licenses. A replacement board uses the same licenses your old board was using. No additional licensing needed — just swap the hardware and reconfigure.

If you’re adding doors and you have unused licenses: Many organizations purchase more door licenses than they initially deploy, knowing they’ll expand. Check your platform’s license count. If you have spare door licenses sitting unused, you just need the hardware.

If you’re adding doors and need more licenses: You’ll need to purchase additional door licenses from your access control software provider before the new controller can manage those doors in your system. We sell the hardware; the software licensing comes from your platform vendor.
